Photo upload problems

Dear members,

our forum provider sold the forum platform some month ago to another internet company.
The new owner promised to continue software improvements and support. But, unfortunately, the opposite is true.
So in all the forums on this platform it is currently (and it seem to be since 3 month) not possible to upload pictures.
We await eagerly a solution, but nobody knows when.

Meanwhile there are at least two ways to publish pictures in your article.

1.
You can use other platform to upload your photos. For example: www.photobucket.com. It's for free, nearly unlimited webspace and easy to join.
After upload they offer the linkline you can copy and paste directly into your forum article to link to your photo. Easy to handle.
If you want to choose another image hosting provider please search the web for "free image hosting" (another example: www.flickr.com).
Some of our members already use this way.

2.
Another way, only for temporary solution (because of limited webspace) is, to send your pictures to my email address (info@opiumgewichte.com).
Please no bigger size than 150 KB/file or 10 MB/email.
I will upload your pictures to my webspace and post it to your article. Please tell me the requested position.

"Normally"
In our charged forum premium version 30 MB/user should be available for picture upload.
Picture-size should not be more than 150 KB (better approx. 100 KB). It corresponds roughly to 200 pictures/user. Not bad.

Kindly excuse any inconvenience.
I hope, our provider will find a solution very soon.

Best regards,
M.

Thai figurines

Bangkok Figurines

Here I present five figurines I bought in Bangkok in 1982. Once these figurines have been given as lucky charms. Later on they came into trade as "weights". In Burma they were rare. I think these figurines have been cast by the same craftsmen which produced the weights using standard quantities of wax or brass. Therefore it can be explained that they often have a mass in grams which correspond to real weights, roughly 15, 31, 62, 124 g (never havier) which is not the system of Burma and may represent price rates. The mass of other figurines like the "pagoda weights" is often far from the weight standards and their multiples, proving that they are in reality no weights. Any evidence of wear and tear is missing.

I am not alone in the world with my opinion. Gerard Houben, the Dutch expert for weights all over the world agreed with me in this point (cf. his book: 5000 Years of weights, published in Zwolle, the Netherlands).

http://www.opiumweights.white-elefant.com/H.Mollat/Bi_Gew_R30_5_Fig_Bngkok_konv.jpg

The figurines shown here may have the following meaning (starting on the left side):

1. Monkey eating a fruit – "birth" in Buddhist belief
2. Elephant – Incarnation of the Buddha; first half of wednesday in Burma
3. Saddled horse - Chinese calendar animal
4. Hintha. Holy goose in Burma and in Thailand
5. "Dragon-serpent", Naga in Burmese; animal of saturday. An important mystic "animal" which has proper pagodas in Burma.

Since I have been in Burma I am less familiar with Thai customs. I would be glad, if forum members from Thailand could supplement the interpretation from their point of view.

These figurines don't loose their collecting value, but they are "Thai figurines", not weights at all. Apart from these figurines and the chinese calendar animals (rat, buffalo, tiger, hare, serpent, horse, goat, ape, cock, dog and pig) craftsmen are producing modern fakes such as cow, peacock, spider, octopus, snail, fish, turtle etc. which likewise are sold as "weights".

hartmutmollat

Greetings! Thanks to the kindness of Michael I have been invited to join the forum. I now have and I am sending you my first message as an introduction. I am Keith Syers, an Englishman by birthday but now living and working in Thailand. I work in the Northern part of Chiang Rai province, some 45 km from the border with Myanmar (Burma) and 50 km from Laos. This is the Golden Triangle, famouus for opium and, oh yes!----opium weights. I first became addicted (to opium weights, that is) in 1992 and since then I have tried to control my obsession. I have been restrained of late but fairly regular visits to Laos and to Chiang Mai (good outlets but many fakes) more than test my resolve. After briefly checking the web site I have decided to visit Mae Sai (on the Thai side of the border with Myanmar). This where it all started some 18 years ago. At that time opium weights were bought according to bulk weight, regardless of form, age, and quality, and they were very cheap. As my fairly busy schedule permits, I will try to contribute to the forum. I am interested in the history/age of weights, the composition of weights, and fakes (and how one might detecyt them). I will write a few lines about this in due course. In Chiang Mai, in particular, we have some good 'copiers' and one shop rather proudly states 'Original Antiques, Visit our Factory.' On that happy note I will sign off.
Keith (The New Boy)
